Some cool new programs

I don’t know if this just some fanciful graphics or something truly marvelous. Check it out if you can (it’s for Mac only):

NodeBox | Evolution

The other cool application I stumbled upon:

Scala Ray

It’s hard to implement a ray-tracer and, yet, these guys seem to have implemented Ambient Occlusion in version 0.1 itself. Render times seem to be a bit slow though.

  1. The render times are horrible but I’m sure they will get a lot better (we haven’t worked on any optimization what so ever). We are really surprised that people are actually downloading the program it this very early state. Thanks for mentioning us.

I should mention that I haven’t actually downloaded the program and played with it. *sigh* Wish I had more time. I just happened to see the high render times on your blog.

Though, I am pretty amazed with the “apparent” set of features; reflection, ambient occlusion, soft shadows (or area lights probably) in such an early release. Kudos!

Btw, one thing looking amiss, is antialiasing. hope, it’s on the top of your todo list.

We actually have antialiasing the problem is that we crop RGB values above 255 so the border of the light source look really bad. Prober post processing of the image is up high on the todo list.
Don’t worry about not downloading the program it’s really just a demo of things to come – I was just surprised that even with such a short feature list we’ve actually got people downloading the program from sourceforge .
